What is the Better Prefold Cloth Diaper, Chinese or Indian?

Prefold Cloth diapers can be divided into two types, Chinese prefold and Indian prefold. Each diaper prefold has its own advantage and disadvantage. You must pick the one that makes better sense for you and the one that simply works best for you. Here is a comparative review of the two.

First of all, for those not in the know, what is a prefold? Prefolds are normally made of cotton twill or cotton gauze, which are folded into thick absorbent rectangles. The cloths are folded and stitched closely at the ends so a thicker area is made in the middle for maximum absorbency. It presents less bulk on the sides. There are different thicknesses depending on the age of the baby, from infant up to toddlers. Other manufacturers use various kinds of fabrics including hemp, bamboo and Sherpa, a kind of thick terry.

So what is the difference of Chinese from Indian prefold? Chinese prefold cloth diapers styles are made in China, obviously. This type is longer lasting for it is sturdier. It is made with a more durable fabric compared to Indian prefold cloth diapers. Indian style, on the other hand is made in India or Pakistan. It is softer and therefore much more absorbent. It holds up to fewer washings compared to Indian style. Both styles plump up and become softer after washing. The differences of both diapers are subtle, so whatever style you prefer, it would not matter as long as you buy only “diaper service quality” or DSQ. DSQ is classified as diapers that are made to stand even against industrial strength washing.

To bleach or not to bleach? To whiten the fabric of the diapers, bleaching is often a solution. When you want to do this, use peroxide instead of the usual chlorine, this is better for the environment. Just take note that regular bleaching makes the fibers of the cloth diapers less sturdy. Some prefers to bleach, some loves the natural color of cotton and some uses dyes. It all depends on personal preferences.

Whether Chinese or Indian diapers, both styles are great for burp clothes because both are thick and absorbent. Although, most mothers prefer the infant size bleached kind. Hand dyed color prefolds are also great to use to keep your baby’s bottoms dry. Quality colored prefolds are made with non-toxic dyes so you do not have to worry about that, it is safe for your baby.
